Touring Ireland with the Jeff Scroggins Band

The gang at the Cliffs of Moher.

I started hearing Greg Blake at festivals in CO and other western states a few years ago and was blown away by his beautiful, expressive baritone bluegrass voice and lead-the- charge guitar playing. I’d pull together jam sessions with him whenever I could. He invited me to play on his first solo recording, Heart and Home, at which time I met banjo powerhouse Jeff Scroggins who played on a few tracks of Greg’s project. There was a good chemistry there so Jeff asked to play on the next Jeff Scroggins and Colorado project called Ramblin’ Feels Good. I did some shows with them in the summer of 2016 and I’ll be doing a handful of tours with them in 2017, the first being a 3-week tour of Ireland that just kicked off. It’s February 22nd and I’m in a B&B in Sixmilebridge where we’re playing tomorrow night. I haven’t played in a good, rocking bluegrass band in a long time so I’m really looking forward to the music, and also to rambling around Ireland which I dearly love, and where the audiences are particularly appreciative, perhaps because of the deep cultural connection to their own traditional music which of course has contributed significantly to American Bluegrass. 3/9/17 We’re currently in our last week of a fantastic tour. The proximity of the shows, because of the small size of the country, has left time for us to do a number of side trips to some amazing places. These include glass shops in Waterford, The Rock of Cashel, the tower at Ardmore, Inchydoney Beach in Clonakilty, The Copper Coast, and the Cliffs of Moher. There have been some enthusiastic musical throw-downs at pubs after shows complete with Greg singing George Jones songs for country music lovers in attendance. I had some old-time tunes with Old friend and Fiddle Puppet Alum, Matt Gordon (now residing in Clonakilty) at The Corner House in Cork City after our show there. One of my most unique experiences was visiting a former Waterford Crystal glass cutter who now has his own little shop in Clashmore where we played, then had a couple of days off. He was very gracious, demonstrating his deep knowledge of and skill at this exacting craft!
